Before We Finish: Mark B. Johnson, Consultant, Advisor & Board Member

Mark Johnson

One of my favourite things about work is the interesting people I meet every day. When I remember, I ask people five quick questions 'before we finish' our meetings. This edition: Mark B. Johnson, a San Francisco-based  advisor, consultant and board member with an extensive background in (and passion for) technology innovation.

Who is your last text from? What does it say?

It’s from a colleague whom I’d introduced to a client, and he was updating me on where they were in the process of kicking off a new project.

Do you have a mentor?

Not in the traditional sense. I try to learn things from everyone, and that is easy when your friends are all smarter than you. I am fortunate to have a small circle of women in my life whom are always there for me and are never afraid to be brutally honest with me - whether I think I need it or not at the time.

Favourite failure? (your own)

Too many to have a favourite, but the commonality has been failing to trust my instincts and having let other people convince me of a different path.

What podcast do you never miss?

The Critical Path and a16z, both available in iTunes.

What haven't you achieved yet?

More than I have accomplished to date. In the spirit of the Einstein quotation, “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” The more I do, the more I realize how little I have done.
